Great Teachers…Who are They?

The Great Schools website has stated “Teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. It demands broad knowledge of subject matter, curriculum, and standards; enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and a love of learning; knowledge of discipline and classroom management techniques; and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. With all these qualities required, it’s no wonder that it’s hard to find great teachers.”

There are many teachers who have been categorized as great teachers by administrators, by students, and by parents. The list of qualities is usually consistent with what Great Schools has designated. These qualities include being prepared for lessons, setting high expectations for students, and being masters of the subject area(s).

However, there is one quality that surpasses all (according to this blog author). That one is “Great teachers form strong relationships with their students and show that they care about them as people.” Whenever teachers take the time to ask their students about what they may be looking for in a great teacher, many times the students will state they want to know that the teacher values them as their students in the classroom.

A most recent visit to a local school with Field Experience I students from
Saint Vincent supports this thinking. High school students from that school had the opportunity to present their stories and viewpoints to the visiting SVC education majors. All of the students shared, in one way or another, that they wanted teachers who took the time to help them in every way possible. The students at the school also emphasized the desire for teachers who paid attention to their needs and worked with them to help them solve problems they may be enduring in their personal lives.

This same quality should be found in all teachers regardless of the grade level and/or school the students may attend. Students everywhere want to feel valued whenever it comes to their contributions they make in the classroom, their thoughts they wish to share, and their challenges they hope to overcome.
